We often focus on our own failures and the distances we’ve traveled away from God. But let me tell you something, folks—what the Lord did for us so that we could be welcomed back is absolutely incredible. We serve a God who isn’t just waiting for us to return; He is actively welcoming us.
The Heart of the Father
We often focus on our own failures, but the meat of this message is found in the Father’s response. In Luke 15:20, we see the heart of God in action:
“And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.”
The point is this: God isn’t waiting for you to get your life perfect before He accepts you. He sees you from a “great way off.” His compassion is what drives Him to run toward you. The welcome of the prodigal son shows us that God’s grace is proactive; He is reaching out to us before we even reach the front door.
Restoration, Not Just Relocation
The Father’s welcome wasn’t just about letting the son back into the house; it was about full restoration. We see this in Luke 15:22:
“But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet.”
-
The Robe: He covers our past with His righteousness.
-
The Ring: He restores our authority as His children.
-
The Shoes: He prepares us to walk in a new direction.
What the Lord did for us to make this kind of welcome possible is totally amazing. He didn’t just give us a place to stay; He gave us back our identity.
A Reason to Celebrate
We concluded by looking at the joy of heaven. Luke 15:24 tells us, “For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.” If you feel lost today, know that there is a celebration waiting for your return. The “Prodigal Son Welcome” is available to anyone who will simply turn toward home.
Walking it Out
This week, stop listening to the voice of the enemy that tells you that you’ve gone too far. Look at what our God did for us. He has a robe, a ring, and He is waiting for you.
Luke 15:12-24 KJV
12 And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living.
13 And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living.
14 And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want.
15 And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.
16 And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him.
17 And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father’s have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!
18 I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee,
19 And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants.
20 And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.
21 And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son.
22 But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet:
23 And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry:
24 For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.
