Know This as a Man Thinketh So Is He

Every single day, we engage in an invisible battle. It doesn’t take place on a physical battlefield, but right between our ears—the mind of a man is the true battleground on which every moral or spiritual battle is fought. Our thoughts have incredible power—they shape our habits, influence our lives, and ultimately determine our spiritual victory or defeat.

We cannot afford to live on spiritual autopilot. If we want to see victory, we must recognize a fundamental truth from God’s Word: the direction of your mind dictates the direction of your life.

1. The Core Principle of the Mind

The foundational blueprint for how our thoughts shape our reality is tucked away in the Book of Proverbs:

“For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he…”Proverbs 23:7

Your internal thought life is the true mirror of who you are. You will inevitably become on the outside what you truly believe and think on the inside. Because how we think is how we are, we must constantly ask God to change us, purify our desires, and align our thinking with His heart.

2. Refusing the Enemy’s “Docking Privileges”

The Bible describes our minds using the figure of a ship looking for a harbor. While you may be unable to keep disease-ridden ships from sailing back and forth across the open ocean, you have the absolute authority to refuse them docking privileges in the harbor of your mind.

Scripture explicitly warns us against letting toxic, ungodly thoughts set up camp within us:

  • Harboring Wickedness: Jeremiah asked, “How long shall thy vain thoughts lodge within thee?” (Jeremiah 4:14). Deuteronomy similarly cautions us to be careful not to harbor wicked thoughts in our hearts (Deuteronomy 15:9).
  • Entertaining Evil: In the New Testament, Jesus directly confronted the religious leaders by looking at their hearts and asking, “Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts?” (Matthew 9:4).
  • Denying the Flesh: We are instructed to stop plotting for worldly temptations: “But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.” (Romans 13:14).

The enemy loves to take advantage of an ignorant mind or a person pushed around by wayward emotions. We must take control of what we allow our minds to entertain.

3. Bringing Every Thought into Captivity

To win this warfare, we must actively pull down the strongholds and imaginations that the enemy builds up between our ears. This requires taking a strict, authoritative stand over our thought life:

“Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;”2 Corinthians 10:5

Taking a thought captive means telling your mind, “We are not going to think about that, and we are not doing anything that is disobedient to what God wants from us.” It requires daily crucifying the flesh and standing firm against negative emotions, anger, or past failures.

4. The Antidote: Daily Renewing Your Mind

We cannot successfully guard our minds in a vacuum; we must actively replace the garbage of this world with the truth of God’s Word. This happens through two essential scriptural shifts:

First, we must choose to transform our mindsets rather than letting the world mold us:

“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”Romans 12:2

Second, we must deliberately fill our mental spaces with holy, virtuous things:

“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”Philippians 4:8

When we choose to filter our focus through things that are pure, lovely, and praiseworthy, we force our minds to adopt the very character of God. As Philippians 2:5 commands, “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.”

Win the Battle Today

No one is such a “super Christian” that they can survive spiritual warfare without daily prayer, daily alignment, and complete reliance on the Holy Spirit. We need Him every single day.

Take inventory of your thought life today. If you have been letting thoughts of anxiety, defeat, or bitterness drop anchor in your heart, evict them in Jesus’ name. Renew your mind, think on His promises, and walk forward in complete victory!
