A Godly Mother

A Godly Mother

Praise the Lord! It is a blessing to honor the mothers among us today. In a world that often measures worth by appearance, achievement, or applause, we need to look at the eternal standard found in God’s Word. Today’s message, A Godly Mother, isn’t just for moms; it’s a word for everyone who wants to live a life that carries weight in the eyes of God.

The Courageous Sacrifice of Jochebed

We began by looking at the life of Jochebed in Exodus 2:1–10. Her story shows us that a mother’s selfless love and sacrifice can literally change the course of history.

  • Defying the Enemy: Jochebed and her husband were dedicated people who were willing to “defy the order of Pharaoh” to keep the commandments of God.

  • A Call to Defiance: Just as they defied Pharaoh, we are called to defy the things the enemy throws our way—sickness, financial stress, or anything that hinders our living for God.

  • Protecting the Promise: Jochebed hid Moses for three months and then trusted God by placing him in an “Ark of bulrushes,” demonstrating a faith that refused to give in to fear.

The Pattern of Proverbs 31

We also turned to Proverbs 31:10–31. This passage is often used to set a standard, but the meat of the word today is that it doesn’t present perfection; it presents a pattern.

  • Inward Substance: God doesn’t measure a woman by outward success or titles that fade, but by her “inward substance”—a life lived with purpose and guided by wisdom.

  • The Fear of the Lord: The anchor of this pattern is found in Proverbs 31:30: “Favor is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised”.

  • A Lasting Testimony: A godly mother is defined by a lifetime of faithfulness. Her children and husband “arise and call her blessed” not because of what she owns, but because of who she is in God.

Worth Defined by God

The pressure on mothers today is real, and the expectations can feel heavy and “never enough”. But remember:

  • Shifting Standards: The world’s standards are constantly shifting; what is celebrated today is forgotten tomorrow.

  • Divine Value: You are valuable not because the world says so, but because God says you are valuable.

  • An Eternal Treasure: If you have been blessed by the touch of a godly mother, you have enjoyed one of the world’s greatest treasures.

Walking it Out

This week, let’s stop trying to meet the unsearchable standards of society and instead follow the godly example set before us. Whether you are a mother or not, aim for a life anchored in the fear of the Lord. When we live for Him, our works will “praise Him in the gates” eternally.

God bless all of our mothers!
